I have always loved animals but, unfortunately, have never been able to have a pet of my own. This was due mainly to the nature of my job, which would take me away from home on a regular basis. The closest I have ever got to achieving this was through my daughters and their Rabbit, Guinea Pigs and Tropical fish.
When I took retirement in 2014 there were two things I wanted to do. One was to start doing more exercise and, the second was to do some kind of voluntary work, especially if connected to animals. So, imagine my excitement when I discovered that Holly Hedge, which is right on my doorstep, was advertising for volunteer dog walkers. Bingo, exercise and animals, my two wishes captured in one go!
I quickly applied to become a volunteer and couldn’t wait to do my induction. The great day arrived and I duly became a proud Volunteer Dog Walker. After several months of regularly walking dogs of all shapes, sizes and temperaments, imagine my joy and surprise when I was the asked to become a “Green Badger” and entrusted with selecting and harnessing dogs on my own. From there I then started to help with the running of induction courses myself. To be able to mix and socialise with so many wonderful animals is truly amazing and heart-warming. Soon after I was asked to join the committee and become a Trustee. This was a very easy decision to make as seeing the passion and commitment of the staff and the wonderful committee on a day to day basis makes you want to be that much more involved.
