People and Animals, The Combating Loneliness Project

Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have been helping people struggling to cope in their current situations. We believe people and animals can work together through these difficult months, and know that for every animal we rescue, one person’s life is changed for the better. We launched The Combating Loneliness Project, where we aim to help people in hardship who can no longer care for their pets, and matchmake people experiencing loneliness with suitable companions.

One of the feelings millions of us are experiencing during the current coronavirus pandemic is loneliness. In our combined efforts to stay safe and save lives, our usual ways of seeing family, friends or just familiar faces have been put on pause.

Every week we answer the phone to people in desperate situations, weeping and begging us to help, with nowhere else to turn. Some are shielding and desperately lonely, and tell us they feel they have no reason to wake up anymore, all the days blend into one. Some have been diagnosed with a terminal illness and have no one to take care of their beloved pets, some are needing to move into a care home or with family as they are struggling to take care of themselves or have mental health issues, others are being offered a space in a shelter to escape domestic violence where they cannot take their precious pets. With every new week another major company announces it is reducing its staff and people who have never before been concerned for their livelihoods are being faced with a grim reality they hadn’t planned for. When they have exhausted every other option, they turn to us.

Support in Two Ways

We support vulnerable people, prioritising those affected by COVID19, guaranteeing a safe space for their pet so they can focus on their health.

“Dad has serious health conditions (COPD, mobility, heart problems) and needs to move in with family to self isolate safely. He also suffers mental health issues so cannot be alone. It breaks our hearts; Dougie and Daisy are amazing dogs. Dad needs to leave asap and the dogs can’t go with him. If we cannot rehome them we’re terrified of what will happen.” – Abby

We provide a matchmaking service where we pair people with rescues, prioritising people who are alone and in need of a companion. We want to continue this through winter when people are most vulnerable, and cold weather combined with loneliness can be devastating. Please note that we do have to take into account many considerations to ensure a suitable match is made, and the welfare of our rescues is paramount. Our decisions will always be made in the best interests of our dogs and cats, and our rehoming criteria remains the same.

If you are in a similar situation to those described above and are looking for help rehoming your pet, please get in touch with us on the contact details below. If you are looking for a new companion to help you through the Winter months please take a look at our animals looking for homes and then contact us using the information below asking for an application form, and let us know about your circumstances. We know working together we can help our rescues, and our community too.
