Veterinary costs appeal – Mitch

Mitch

French Bulldog, Age 2

Mitch arrived at Holly Hedge in very poor health, he was experiencing persistent vomiting and rapid weight loss likely caused by hiatal hernia aggravated by his BOAS. In addition, his gait was very wobbly and he required an aural haematoma to be drained.

Mitch has required multiple X-Rays, BOAS and reconstructive surgery on his palate, gums, and his excessive nasal folds removed. He has had hip and leg X-Rays and an ultrasound and may need surgery in due course.

Mitch has now been adopted and very happy in his new home.

History

In very poor health when arrived at Holly Hedge.

Medical Notes

Multiple issues. In order of priority:

1kg weight loss in 1 week – likely due to persistent vomiting and regurgitation despite omeprazole BID – this may be due to a sliding/hiatal hernia which is being aggravated by increased pressure in the thorax due to upper airway obstruction. (BOAS)

Inspiratory stertor – elongated soft palate – will need soft palate resection – this may help to improve regurgitation a little. Will not resolve completely unless hernia repaired.

Very ataxic, uncoordinated, and wobbly on walking – hip room is almost too lax? Patella’s seem to be displaced on stifle flexion – x-rays/ultrasound to look for hiatal hernia and x-rays of hips/stifles (to include entire limb to see alignment).

Aural haematoma – only refilled slightly – so redrained twice – unlikely to need surgery but will have slightly deformed ear flap.

Excessive nasal folds – itchy and inflamed, fungal infection currently under control as cleaning daily but advised resection to prevent persistent infection.

Treatment

  • Hip & leg X-Rays
  • Drain and redrain of aural haematoma
  • BOAS, reconstructive surgery on soft palate and gums – nasal flaps removal
  • Full vaccinations, flea and worming

Ongoing

  • Potentially ongoing meds and further surgery needed – for hips/back legs/lack of kneecaps
