Pip Sharp and Jenny Green

Pip Sharp and Jenny Green are two wonderful people who volunteer their time and energy to putting on amazing events that raise funds for us. They organised a fabulous Fashion Show, that took Long Ashton by storm. The event was a huge success thanks to their hard work and excellent organisation skills, and the event raised a whopping £944.39, which will provide vital care for our rescues.

Pip & Jenny (the middle two gorgeous ladies from the right hand side) regularly go above and beyond for Holly Hedge, and we are so grateful that their compassion seems to know no bounds. Not forgetting a huge thank you to the volunteers who joined them and everyone who donated a raffle prize – they were highly sought after!

Well done ladies, and thank you!

Hannah runs 10k for animals in need!

Hannah Farr has been with Holly Hedge for almost two years and become an integral part of the cattery team. Hannah is always ready with a smile and treats every cat that comes in with respect and love, and consistently works hard to help even the most frightened cat learn to trust people, so they are ready for a loving home.

Hannah took on a huge challenge recently and ran the Simply Health Great Bristol 10K for us! With a recently injured knee, Hannah wasn’t sure if she would be able to run 10k, but two weeks to go her knee rallied and she started training hard and fundraising. Hannah’s determination and hard work paid off, she completed the run in 1 hour, 4 mins & 25 seconds and smashed her fundraising target by raising a total £636!

After completing the run, Hannah said:
“A huge HUGE THANK YOU!! to everyone that has donated to help & better the lives of all the cats and dogs at Holly Hedge Animal Sanctuary. I know I’ve said it before but I really appreciate all of your support! Thank you for being so kind, my heart feels full!”

We are so grateful to have people like Hannah at Holly Hedge who go above and beyond for animals in need. Thank you Hannah!

Jasper Update

In January we asked you all to help us look after two kittens, Jasper and Beanie with an extremely rare oesophageal condition that meant they would have special needs for life. For anyone new to this story you can read about the 2 special kittens here.

Your donations made a huge difference and covered the cost of all their medical needs to date, which is incredible for both the kittens and us as a charity!

Around a month ago, Joe Perry Gupp contacted us and said he wanted to make each of them a special feeding station with a raised bowl, so when they ate food it would pass naturally down their oesophagus, making their lives as normal as possible. This felt like a dream come true – we had been trying to figure out how to raise the funds for feeding stations for them. Joe works for an innovative design agency and has designed these amazing feeders so as the kittens grow the bowl can be elevated again and again. We are delighted to share pictures of Jasper using his feeding station, and we are told he loves using it! And yes, in more fantastic news; those pictures are taken of him in his new home where he settled in within the space of an hour and is the picture of content!

This is the life that we dream of for all of the animals who come to us, and we are so grateful to all of you for helping them along their journey. Thank you all xx

Gloucestershire Cricket Club muck in!

A huge thanks to Gloucestershire County Cricket Club who rallied some of their brilliant players to come and give our sensory garden some much needed TLC.
The sensory garden is instrumental in exposing our animals to what they would expect in a normal home; some animals come to us having never lived in a home environment or been outside, having the garden means we can slowly introduce things to them so it’s not too overwhelming when they do find a new home. Thank you all so much, our dogs are especially grateful!

The Big Give Christmas Challenge!

A huge thank you to all of our incredible Pledges; Cyberfive, ALD Automotive, Chubb Fire & Security, John Hall, Nicky Leeson, Mary Boyce, Julie Cole and Robert and Christine Browne.
Our amazing Pledges match funded £3,000 worth of donations from our wonderful supporters, and this meant we also were eligible for an extra donation of £1,415 from our Champion, The Reed Foundation. In total we have raised the grand total of £9,887! We are so truly grateful to each and every person who donated, read and shared our campaign.
You are all heroes to our animals.

Paws in Peril – Save our Sanctuary

Dear Friends and Supporters,

I am writing to you as someone who shares our love and passion for animals, and it is with a heavy heart that I have to break the news that Holly Hedge is facing its greatest challenge.

Over time, costs have escalated to over £650,000 a year to keep the Sanctuary running to a high standard and to give our rescues the best possible chance of a new beginning and a happy ever after, but we have been constantly using our reserves to help fund the gap by contributing towards vets bills and running costs as donations and legacies have reduced.

Unless we are able to raise at least another £300,000 each year, we may not be able to continue to help nearly as many desperate and needy cases. Our depleting reserves are largely due to building the new kennels which were so urgently needed, as the existing ones were dilapidated, crumbling and prone to flooding. The dogs are so much happier in their new surroundings and far less stressed, so a great result achieved – but at a huge cost.

Vet bills have risen considerably and reached a staggering £100,000 in the last financial year, as no animal is denied the veterinary help they need to enjoy the best quality of life. We have followed our hearts and carried out our solemn promise to do everything in our power to make our rescues pain free and whole again.

We struggle financially to keep up with the insurmountable numbers coming to us in urgent need of veterinary treatment. Some poor souls have stoically endured excruciating pain straying for years before coming to Holly Hedge, and the difference made to their lives once treatment has been given is worth any amount of money. Many have needed expensive operations to give them a new lease of life, others have been in road accidents with no owner coming forward, or found emaciated, dehydrated and taken straight to the vet, often out of hours. If vital treatment hadn’t been carried out, some would almost certainly have perished. We cannot harden our hearts and refuse sick, elderly or injured and abandoned animals. Although we cannot save them all, which is heart breaking, we put our heart and soul into ensuring all of our rescues have a happy ending – which is our legacy of love.

At Holly Hedge they are given love, kindness, every home comfort possible and shown that people can be caring and trusted. It is so heart-warming when their faith is restored and they are ready to face the world again in a loving new home.

Holly Hedge finds homes for up to 800 rescues a year, and the joy of seeing them go off to a new beginning is what keeps us all going and, at its heart, is what the Charity is all about.

Our staff and volunteers are second to none and give all our rescues love in abundance as well as plenty of enrichment to help them cope in a kennel/cattery situation. Their devotion and dedication knows no bounds and the animals always come first.

We have plans in place to sustain the future of Holly Hedge and through kind friends have bought the field next to the Sanctuary, which will generate income and enable us to apply for bio-diversity grants and protect dwindling and threatened wildlife. There are cost cutting measures in place, as well as income generating strategies, but this will take time to implement and right now we are on a mission of survival and we so desperately need your help to overcome the challenges that inevitably lie ahead.

Holly Hedge exists purely to help animals in need and strives to give them all a much brighter and happier future. They come to us with broken hearts, broken limbs and broken spirits, but with your support we can continue to put them back together again.

Please, help us to help those who cannot speak for themselves. There is nowhere more totally committed and dedicated to making a better life for all our animals than Holly Hedge. Our rescues mean the world to us, but we cannot exist on love for them alone.

Please make a donation today to save our Sanctuary, whatever you can afford would be greatly appreciated and could help us to save a life.
